Keeping on top of your physical health has never been easier thanks to our range of medical accessories, including blood pressure monitors, thermometers and much more.
How does a blood pressure monitor work?
Blood pressure monitors use cuffs that gently inflate to cut off blood flow for a very short amount of time. This stops the pressure, so that when pressure returns, the monitor can get an accurate reading. The cuff will slowly release, allowing blood flow, so that the sensor can register your pulse.
How to use a blood pressure monitor at home
Make sure you’re wearing loose-fitting or short-sleeved clothing so that you can comfortably push up your sleeve to fasten the cuff on your upper arm, level with your heart. Once it’s in place. follow the instructions that come with your blood pressure monitor. Make sure you’re feeling relaxed and comfortable, and stay as still as possible to get an accurate reading. Always use the same arm for consistency, and take two or three readings and then work out the average.
How to choose a blood pressure monitor
When choosing a blood pressure monitor, it’s important to ensure you get the right cuff size, as using the wrong size can affect your reading. Measure around your upper arm (between your shoulder and elbow) to make sure you get the correct size.
It’s also important to make sure your blood pressure monitor has been listed as ‘clinically validated’ by the British Hypertension Society.
